Casino Bonuses — How to Read the Terms Before You Claim

A casino bonus is not free money — it is a marketing loan with conditions attached. The headline number is meaningless until you read four terms: the wagering requirement, the game weighting, the maximum bet and the expiry. Once you can read those, you can price any offer in under a minute.

    • Bonus types: welcome, no-deposit, reload, cashback, free spins
    • Wagering requirements and how to calculate them
    • Game weighting: why table games barely count
    • Max bet rules, max cashout and expiry traps
    • When declining the bonus is the better decision

    The main bonus types

A welcome bonus matches a percentage of your first deposit, often 100% up to a cap, sometimes across several deposits. A no-deposit bonus gives a small amount with no purchase but almost always has the harshest wagering and a low maximum cashout. Reload bonuses target existing players with smaller matches.

Cashback returns a percentage of net losses over a period and is usually the most honest offer type, because low-wagering or wager-free cashback has real, calculable value. Free spins are usually bundled with a deposit match and tied to specific slots at a fixed spin value.

Wagering requirements — the actual price

A 35x wagering requirement means you must bet 35 times the bonus before withdrawing anything from it. On a 100 bonus that is 3,500 in turnover. Some operators apply the multiplier to deposit plus bonus, which silently doubles the requirement — read which one applies.

Do the arithmetic with the game's RTP. Turning over 3,500 on a 96% RTP slot costs about 140 in expected losses to unlock a 100 bonus. That is why anything above 40x is usually negative value, and why 20-25x offers are the ones worth claiming.

    Game weighting and max bet

Slots normally count 100% toward wagering, while blackjack and roulette count 10% or even 0%. If you are a table-game player, a slot-weighted bonus is effectively unusable — you would need ten times the turnover to clear it.

Almost every bonus caps the maximum bet while wagering, typically at 5 per spin. Exceeding it even once can void the entire bonus and any winnings from it. This is the single most common reason withdrawals are refused, and it is enforced automatically.

Expiry, max cashout and sticky bonuses

Bonuses expire, usually in 7 to 30 days, and unmet wagering forfeits the balance. No-deposit bonuses typically cap winnings at a low maximum cashout regardless of what you actually won, so a large win from a free bonus is truncated to that cap.

A sticky bonus can never be withdrawn itself — only winnings above it. A non-sticky bonus becomes real cash once wagering is complete. The difference is significant and it is always stated in the terms.

    When to say no

Decline the bonus when you want the freedom to withdraw at any moment, when you play table games and the weighting is punitive, when wagering exceeds 40x, or when a maximum cashout limits any realistic win. Most platforms let you opt out at deposit; the option is there for a reason.

Playing without a bonus means every unit in your balance is genuinely yours. For many players that is worth far more than a headline percentage.
