Why the strategy inverts
In a normal tournament, more chips always mean more equity. In a satellite, once you have enough chips to lock a seat, additional chips are worth close to nothing, because the prize is identical for every qualifier.
The consequence is that risk is asymmetric. A coin flip that would be clearly correct in a regular tournament can be a large error in a satellite, because losing costs the seat while winning adds little.
