How to Play Poker — A Beginner's Guide

Have no idea where to start? This is the most basic poker guide you'll find. You'll learn what poker is, how to play a hand from start to finish, what blinds are, what the flop, turn, and river mean, how to build a winning hand, and how to avoid the mistakes every beginner makes. After this guide you'll know enough to sit down at the table.

Hand rankings — strongest to weakest

    1. Royal Flush — A-K-Q-J-T same suit. Strongest hand in the game.
    2. Straight Flush — 5 cards in sequence, same suit.
    3. Four of a Kind — 4 cards of the same value.
    4. Full House — three of a kind + pair.
    5. Flush — 5 cards of the same suit.
    6. Straight — 5 sequential cards.
    7. Three of a Kind
    8. Two Pair
    9. Pair
    10. High Card — nothing made, highest card wins.

    Terms you must know

    • Fold — quit the hand, forfeit what you already put in.
    • Call — match the current bet and stay in.
    • Raise — increase the bet.
    • Check — no current bet, pass without paying.
    • All-In — bet all your chips.
    • Pot — total money accumulated in the middle of the table.

    5 most common beginner mistakes

    • Playing too many hands. Most hands aren\'t worth it. Fold ~70% preflop.
    • Falling in love with Ace. A♠K♣ is a good hand — but it loses to pairs more often than you\'d think.
    • Chasing draws without math. Learn pot odds.
    • Bluffing without a reason. A bluff only works when your story makes sense on the board.
    • Not managing bankroll. Only play stakes you can afford to lose. Bankroll guide.
