Two Main Events and one famous hand

Brunson won the World Series of Poker Main Event in 1976 and again in 1977. In both years the winning hand was ten-deuce, an unremarkable holding that became one of poker's most recognised pieces of folklore and is still known as "the Brunson".

He continued to play the biggest cash games in Las Vegas long after those titles, which is the achievement that impresses professionals most. Winning a tournament is variance-friendly; surviving decades in the highest games is not.

Super/System and the birth of strategy writing

Before Super/System, serious strategy was closely guarded. Brunson published it, with contributions from other leading players of the era, and effectively created the category of poker education. Contemporaries thought he was destroying his own edge; instead he expanded the game.

The specific advice is now dated — the modern game has been rebuilt by computational analysis — but the aggressive, pressure-based approach it advocated anticipated a great deal of what solvers later confirmed.

    Why he still matters

Brunson represents the transition from poker as an underground pursuit to poker as a public game with published theory and televised finals. Almost every strategy resource that exists today descends from the decision he made to write the book.

For a modern player, the value is perspective rather than technique: a reminder that aggression, game selection and longevity have mattered in every era, whatever the current theory looks like.
