The European wheel has 37 pockets: 1-36 plus a single zero, giving a 2.7% house edge on every bet. The American wheel adds a double zero for 38 pockets and a 5.26% edge — nearly double the cost for an identical-looking game.
The French wheel is European with extra rules, and it is the best version available. Never sit at a double-zero table when a single-zero table is open; that one choice halves your long-run cost.
Straight up on one number pays 35:1, split on two pays 17:1, street on three pays 11:1, corner on four pays 8:1, and line on six pays 5:1. Every one of these carries the same 2.7% edge on a single-zero wheel — the house takes its cut through the payout being one unit short of true odds.

Red/black, odd/even and high/low pay 1:1 and hit just under half the time — the zero is what makes it "just under". Dozens and columns pay 2:1 and cover twelve numbers each.
Outside bets are lower variance, not lower edge. Betting red every spin for an hour costs the same 2.7% of turnover as betting a single number, it just loses more smoothly.
On French tables, La Partage returns half of any even-money bet when the ball lands on zero, cutting the edge on those bets from 2.7% to 1.35%. En Prison instead locks the bet for one more spin to win it back whole, with a similar effect.
That makes even-money bets on a French table the second-best value in the casino after blackjack. If your platform offers a French roulette table, there is no reason to play any other version.
Martingale doubles after every loss to recover with one win. It works until a long losing streak meets the table maximum or your bankroll, and then it loses everything accumulated. Labouchère, Fibonacci and D'Alembert reshape the same problem without solving it.
The mathematics is simple: the wheel has no memory, every spin carries the same 2.7% edge, and the sum of negative-expectation bets is always negative regardless of their order or size. Systems change the distribution of outcomes, never the average.
